Behavior Examples: Definitions and Level Response Options.

Level 1

• Behaviors that are disruptive to the school environment of self and/or others.
• Primarily handled with redirections or re-teaching in the classroom.

Level 2

• Repeated or significant L1 infractions.
• Disordered behavior toward another student, staff, volunteer, etc.

• May involve office referral.

Level 3

• Repeated or significant L2 infractions.
• Behaviors targeted at others and interfering with safety or destruction of property.

•  Office-referred behaviors; may require suspension.

Level 4

• Behaviors identified as expellable offenses.

• Behaviors that impact the safety of the school community.

• Office-referred behaviors require administrative consequences.

This is not an exhaustive list of behaviors. Administration has final decision-making authority for the classification of behavioral infractions and the most appropriate response(s).

Start with the lowest appropriate level response while considering a student’s IEP and 504 Plan, age and understanding, past history of similar offenses, and severity of incident.

Level One (L1)

Classroom Level Interventions and Responses

L1 Behavior Definition

1. Behavior that is disruptive to the school environment of a student(s) or others.

2. Refusal to comply with reasonable requests.

3. Behaviors managed with a brief intervention by an adult present in that setting.

L1 Behavior Examples

• Name-calling
• Non-verbal disrespect
• Inappropriate behavior
• Inappropriate use of personal device
• Out of assigned area
• Partial or incomplete work
• Late homework
• Accessing non-educational online content
• Inappropriate dress

L1 Behavior Interventions & Responses

1. Select and implement interventions and responses that maintain the continuity of the student’s instruction or are least disruptive to student learning.
2. Consider the use of interventions from multiple categories as appropriate.
3. Consider a student’s IEP or 504 Plan before implementing interventions and responses.
4. Before proceeding to L2, communicate with parent/guardians about recurring behaviors and interventions.
5. Document the behavior and response in eduCLIMBER.

L1 -CATEGORY A – Reteach Behavioral Skills

• Reminder/Redirection of classroom routines and rituals from the behavior matrix
• Reminder/Redirection on ways to ask for help or solve problems
• Reminder/Redirection on ways to manage emotions
• Reminder/Redirection of appropriate classroom language

L1 -CATEGORY B – Implement Restorative Practices

• Quick individual skill coaching
  • “Who/what was hamed”
  • “How can we repair...”
• Collaborative problem solving

L1 -CATEGORY C – Create an Action Plan or Provide a Consequence

• Review (classroom/non-classroom) behavior management plan, including social skills teaching and reinforcement
• Classroom/non-classroom supports
• Seat change, assigned seating
• Loss of setting privileges
• Establish a plan for homework or assignment expectations and completion
• Consult with colleagues

L1 - CATEGORY D – Optional Administrative Actions

• There are no office referred responses for L1 behaviors
• Administration will support with persistent behaviors leading to L2 infractions

Level Two (L2)

Classroom Level or Office-Referred Behaviors, Interventions, and Responses

L2 Behavioral Definition

1. Repeated or significant incident(s) of L1 infractions.
2. Disordered behavior towards another student, staff, volunteer, etc.
3. Behavior that is generally managed with a brief intervention by an adult present in that setting, and may include additional brief contact with office staff.

L2 Behavior Examples

• Swearing at another person

• Electronic-based aggression

• Insubordination

• Accessing inappropriate material online

• Inappropriate social networking content

• Disrespect directed toward another

• Cheating

• Inappropriate physical contact

L2 Behavior Interventions and Responses

1. Select and implement interventions and responses that maintain the continuity of the student’s instruction or are least disruptive.
2. Consider the use of interventions from multiple categories as appropriate.
3. Consider a student’s IEP or 504 Plan before implementing interventions and responses.
4. Communicate with parent/guardians about recurring behaviors and interventions.
5. Document the behavior and response in eduCLIMBER.

L2 – Category A – Reteach Behavioral Skills

• Re-teaching classroom routines and rituals
• Re-teaching ways to ask for help, solve problems, or manage emotions
• Self-charting of behaviors
• Skills practice/role play
• Individual skills coaching for targeted students and aggressors in bullying/harassment incidents

L2 – Category B – Implement Restorative Practices

• Guided conversations using restorative questions
• Community service (as restitution)
• Peer mediation (not to be used for bullying)
• Reflective essay
• Restorative back-to-class plan

L2 – Category C – Create an Action Plan or Provide a Consequence

• Fidelity check of school-wide systems, structures, and supports
• Develop a student skill plan
• Initiate a behavior intervention plan
• Formalize check-in/check out plan with adult 
• Detention
• Loss of setting privileges
• Alternate instruction room
• Consult with building specialists

L2 – Category D  – Optional Administrative Actions that May Result in Removal from Instruction

• Office referral and principal determines additional responses as appropriate
• Potential in-school removal from instruction

Level Four (L4)

Office-Referred Behaviors, Interventions, & Responses

L4 Behavior Definition

1. Behaviors are identifiable as expellable offenses.
2. Repeated or significant incident(s) of L3 infractions.
3. Behaviors that involve safety issues.
4. Behaviors targeted at or targeting others or the school community at large.

L4 Behavior Examples

• Weapons possession or use
• Arson; Pyrotechnics
• Drug and/or alcohol sale/intent to sell
• Sexual assault
• Severe physical assault
• Bomb threats
• Bombs or incendiaries
• Sexting (dependent on the severity of creating, viewing, or sharing)

L4 Behavior Intervetions & Responses

1. Select and implement interventions and responses that maintain the continuity of the student’s instruction or are least disruptive.
2. Consider the use of interventions from multiple categories as appropriate.
3. Consider a student’s IEP or 504 Plan before implementing interventions and responses.
4. Communicate with parent/guardians about recurring behaviors and interventions.
5. Document the behavior and response in eduCLIMBER.

L4 – Category A – Reteach Behavior Skills

•  Individual coaching by licensed support staff

L4 – Category B – Reteach Behavior Skills

• Family group conference

L4 – Category C – Create an Action Plan or Provide a Consequence

• Consultation with related resources that may include:
  • Local Police
  • School Counselors
  • General Counsel
• Consultation with external support agencies

L4 – Category D – Create an Action Plan or Provide a Consequence

• Out-of-school removal from instruction not to exceed 10 days (10 days if there is a recommendation for expulsion)
• Recommendation for expulsion
• Consult with/refer to local law enforcement
